Why “&&”?

The “&&” (or “and and”) refers to the fact that we’re never just one thing.

Whether you’re a poet & a parent & a teacher; or a songwriter & a baker & a dog-walker; or a botanist & an astrologer & a dancer — chances are that no title encapsulates the many things that you care about and practice (see: “[you] contain multitudes”). && gestures to the ways that we resist complete definition. Sometimes, that’s half the fun — as artists we get to find our own processes, rituals, forms, and vernaculars to make sense of ourselves and our time here.

It also alludes to our org’s view on the power of the artist. We feel that art requires devotion, intention, and rigorous care to make an impact. Art-making isn’t always inherently political — but in the space of “&&”, we hope to centre activism, social justice, and context to remind artists of their ability to meaningfully shift perspectives, tell new stories, and take a stance.

Artists&& is 100% queer-led. Our team is based around the Pacific Northwest, with core folks based in Vancouver, BC; Seattle, WA; and elsewhere in the region.

Founded by Britt Clair, Artists&& aims to pull years of facilitation and workshop experience into an event series where artists are celebrated and uplifted for their differences.
